Etymology: May belong to a Slav. word for `ulcer, wound', e.g. OCS vrědъ, Russ. véred, perh. with further connection with Lat. rōdō `gnaw' etc.; Lidén KZ 56, 222. The form ῥώτιγγες (H.) must then be a derailment (example?; diff. Specht Ursprung 231 n. 3). Or the other way round ῥώδιγγες after σμώδιγγες ? -- The variant rather points to a Pre-Greek word (note also the suffix).
